The causes are many, but illegal artisanal and smallscale mining is a major theme. The current government, which came into power at the peak of the crisis in 2017, took steps to deal with the issue by banning galamsey and ASM activities, and setting up an InterMinisterial Committee to develop appropriate regulations.
Small scale mining in Ghana has been listed as illegal due to lack of effective policies made by the Government. The government had recently lifted a ban on all illegal mining activities in Ghana. The government urged the miners to give them ample time to monitor the developments in the sector before implementing the fiveyear Multilateral Mining Integrated Project.
The SmallScale mining law was passed to legalize and formalize Ghana''s large informal mining sector. The law allows smallscale miners to apply for minerals rights from the Secretary of Lands and Natural Resources (Article ) for a duration of 3 to 5 years (Article ) and declares that license to be nontransferable (Article 7).
