I drilled out the shallow holes 4 1/4 from belt to support the home made jig I put the tool in. I had previously built the jig to hold the lathe tool and this also came from Capt Eddie. I wanted a different grind on one of my tools so I placed the tool in the jig and placed against the belt at the desired angle.

A Tool Grinding Rest. Accurate grinding of the required faces can more easily be achieved with an adjustable grinding rest. These machines are cheap, widely available and surprisingly capable for home shop use. The smaller machines with 1 wide belts dont have enough width to grind a tool evenly, the platen is too flexible, the belts wear too quickly, and coarser belts are harder to find.
#0183;#32;You then reset the table to 16 degrees and as you hold the tool at a 35 degree angle (to the belt) you feed the tool straight into the grinder to cut the top face; doing so cuts the side rake at 16 degrees while creating the desired 35 degree back rake at the same time.

#0183;#32;I have the Sears version of this grinder and it grinds lathe tools just fine IF you use ceramic belts. It has only 1/3HP and even wood will bog it down when using aluminum oxide belts but ceramic belts work so well that it can grind cobalt HSS tools without slowing down. The design of the grinder itself allows you to modify the tool rest easily.
